What is Windstorm Insurance?

Strong winds create uplifting, shearing and lateral forces that all cause damage to your home. When combined, these forces have the potential of destroying doors, windows and roofing. Once the outer shell is damaged, water will be able to enter the home causing interior damage. In addition, high winds blow debris onto the home, resulting in further destruction.

Do You Need Windstorm Insurance?

Whether you need windstorm insurance most likely depends on where you live. In areas that are susceptible to windstorms, such as hurricanes and tornadoes, additional insurance coverage is typically required. Those who live in coastal states or Midwestern tornado states will find that windstorms are not covered in their standard homeowners' insurance policy. In some locations you can add optional windstorm coverage to your existing policy. Windstorm insurance is a special property-casualty insurance that is typically offered as a rider.  1257951336 600x400-bf06395

For those that don't live in a place where hurricanes or tornadoes are a common threat, your homeowner’s insurance policy likely covers windstorm damage. If you are concerned that you may not be covered, it is worth checking into by reading your policy or contacting your independent agent.

Reducing the Expense

Windstorm insurance can be expensive, so it may be worthwhile to consider having a certified expert inspector conduct a wind mitigation inspection. The inspector will check your property to see if you have features that will reduce the likelihood of damage during a storm with strong winds. Some examples include concrete block construction, roof straps, secondary water resistance barrier and opening protection. If the inspector determines your home is more likely to survive an extreme weather event, they will provide a certificate which should allow you to have reduced windstorm insurance fees. Florida mandates that rates be lowered for homes with specific wind mitigation features.

Important Points to Know

It is necessary to point out that windstorm coverage typically doesn't include flood coverage. Often hurricanes include flooding so a separate flood policy may be desired. Flooding is typically a significant cause of damage. In addition, many policies require that no new or additional coverages be added after a potential hurricane has reached a certain location.

Whether or not you add windstorm coverage is a personal decision. Obviously coverage will be an added monthly cost, but in the event of a devastating storm, you can receive compensation for damage or loss. Now is the time to consider whether you desire windstorm coverage, as opposed to waiting until a hurricane is approaching your home.
